A Day in the Life of a Business Student

The following is a blog entry from one of our very own students in the Molloy College Division of Business:

Let me begin by formally introducing myself. My name is Everardo Huesca. I'm currently a senior at Molloy College, majoring in Business Management. For my last semester, I' m venturing out side of college to expose myself in different business industries to see if I would like to pursue a career. This semester consist of the following:

• Taking twenty credits
• Interning at Mind-Ur-Business Consulting Firm
• Working part-time at AT&T Inc.
• Co-Authoring a script for publication
• Writing my own script for a feature movie
• Starting my acting career

A lot of my classmates ask me how I have the time to engage in all these activities, let alone take twenty credits in one semester. My response is, when you’re passionate about learning a subject or an industry, there is no limit in what someone will do to get involve and learn. As for me, yes, there will be days that are stressful, but the most important tool you need when engaging in these activities, is time management.

Through your college career, everyone should get the opportunity to intern at a company. During your junior or senior year, landing an internship at a desire firm could open a window of opportunities for you. An internship can give you the insight in industries that are fascinating to you. Interning allows you to network with internal and external contacts. Also, an internship may lead to the possibility of getting a job offer once you graduate from college. In today’s job market, an internship can give you the competitive advantage over other prospective candidates.

Being employed at AT&T gives me opportunity to see 1st hand how a company operates. As a business management major, I am able to implement the tools I receive at Molloy College and use the training from AT&T to give each customer the best experience possible in the retail industry. Along with customer service, I can grasp how each department function within a corporation to work efficiently and effectively.

Furthermore, this past summer I was able to take part in a different business industry, the Film/Entertainment Industry. All my life I wanted to be involved with films. As an actor trying to break into the film industry can be extremely difficult. However, with a business management degree you can utilize the skills taught to be an entrepreneur in this industry. Just like any business, the film industry is just that, another type of business. In acting, you are the CEO, CFO, the marketer, and of course the product. To succeed you need to study and develop your craft all while exposing yourself to agents and casting directors.

During my days on set this summer I had the opportunity to network and meet numerous people who like me, are trying to make a name for themselves in the film industry. In business, you are taught that networking is one of the keys to success. For me, it was definitely a tool that opened doors for me. I was able to meet amazing people, land magazine interview to discuss my acting career and receive the opportunity of a life-time to co- author a script for publication.

As I wrap this post up, I would like to say, whatever your passion is in life just go for it. The worst thing that you can do to yourself is to become afraid. Do not let your fears stop you from venturing out and experiencing something you always wanted to try. Do your research, ask questions, and find ways to get involve in an industry your curious about. Until next blog. =)

Best of luck,
Everardo L. Huesca
